What KYC means
“Know your customer”, often shortened to KYC, is a term for identity and related customer checks. The documents and legal obligations involved depend on the service and jurisdiction.
In Great Britain, the Gambling Commission describes age and identity checks and explains that completion times vary. Its rules should not be assumed to apply to every operator worldwide.
Your documents are sensitive
Before sharing personal documents, establish who is asking, why they need the information and how it will be handled. Read the privacy notice and verify the communication channel. Do not send documents to this journal; it does not verify accounts.
Avoid sharing passwords, one-time codes, card security codes or cryptocurrency recovery phrases in a support conversation. A request to disclose these is a reason to stop and investigate.
Questions deserve clear answers
Ask which entity handles the information, how long it is retained and how to raise a privacy concern. If you cannot establish the identity of the recipient, do not assume that a familiar logo makes the request authentic.
